Texas Hold ‘Em Is The Latest Gambling Phenomenon
If you believe that everything really is “bigger in Texas,” then you can understand why Texas Hold ‘Em has become the hottest game in town. From its humble beginning in Robstown, Texas, this game was brought into Las Vegas in 1967.
Texas gamblers Amarillo Slim, Doyle Brunson and Crandell Addington are credited with bringing that bit of Lone Star showdown to the strip. Most amateurs who played the game converged in the popular Golden Nugget Casino.
A few years later, the now defunct Dunes Casino tried to get the professional players into the game with a Texas Hold ‘Em tournament in 1969. The following year saw the start of the World Series of Poker with a no-limit Texas Hold ‘Em played by eight top poker players.

It is the main draw of this big poker event. The first known guide to playing Texas Hold ‘Em titled Super System was written by Dole Brunson in 1978 and Al Alvarez wrote a narrative account of the Texas Hold ‘Em as the main draw of the World Series of Poker.
It was not long before Texas Hold ‘Em was seen in movies. The Rounders (1998) with Matt Damon featured a slick side to poker playing professionals. A scene of the actual game between Erik Seidel and Johnny Chan in the 1988 World Series of Poker was shown in the film.
Nothing fueled interest in Texas Hold ‘Em faster than the 1998 launch of online poker websites. Amateurs could hone their card skills cheaply and build a reputation in the poker community – all from the comforts of home.
Some poker sites provided online tournaments that were gateways to the World Series of Poker. In fact, the winners of the 2003 and 2004 World Series of Poker qualified as online players.
In comparison to the first World Series of Poker in 1970 which the original eight players played, there were roughly 8,000 who participated in 2006 vying for the grand prize of $12,000,000.
Today, the game can be seen in the television series World Poker Tour. With the growing number of sponsors, Texas Hold ‘Em has gone a long way from its former place in dingy bars and gambling houses to become a regular feature of the sports networks with nationwide viewership.
